  1. Global Abbreviations

  4. Release 1.0 is for U.S. keyboards only.

  7. This program will save you time.  Global 
  8. Abbreviations gives you instant access to
  9. anything you want to define.  It gives you
  10. this access anytime and anywhere!
  11.  
  12. To install, simply run the setup.exe file. 
  13. That's all there is to it.  
  14.  
  15. The installation will create a new 
  16. program group with Global Abbreviations,
  17. the Quick Tour, Readme and Help icons. The installation
  18. will not make any changes to your system files.  Note:
  19. if you use PC Tools for your program mgr. you should 
  20. switch back to the Windows Program Manager for installation.
  21.  
  22. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you move the program 
  23. to your STARTUP GROUP (or equivalent) since you 
  24. will ALWAYS want access to your Global Abbreviations.
  25.  
  26. We also heartily recommend that you spend 5 minutes
  27. to take the Quick Tour.  That will show you some 
  28. of the main features.

  33. Note: Global Abbreviations has an Uninstall feature so 
  34. don't be shy about installing.  You can always get rid of
  35. it if you don't like it (not much chance of that though).

  40. 1. The help file does not always mention that when you wish
  41. to use a :Launch Abbreviation to launch a .hlp file,
  42. you MUST INCLUDE THE COMLETE FILE NAME of the .hlp file.
  43. There is a reminder of this on the popup text you see 
  44. when you begin to enter a :Launch abbreviation in the
  45. Edit Line of the Editor.
  46.  
  47. Example->    :gabhelp c:\windows\globlabb\gabhelp.hlp

  49. 2. The help file and all other documentation says that
  50. you must enter :Launch and :Paste abbreviations completely
  51. (i.e., no partial recognition).  You SHOULD always do this,
  52. however, if you enter a partial AbbrevPart, the first partial
  53. match in your Active List will be :Launched or :Pasted.
  54.  
  55. 3. Here is some further information on the
  56. operation of The Immediate Hot Key.  You will
  57. almost always get the "got it" message when you hit the 
  58. Immediate Hot Key.  You must realize that the program has
  59. no way of knowing if what it "got" is what you "meant."
  60. The most common problem is if you have not delimited what
  61. you have typed with whitespace.  This typically happens 
  62. when you move the caret with the mouse or the arrow keys
  63. and YOU see some whitespace, but have never typed it on
  64. the keyboard.  If you have any problems with recognition
  65. of an abbreviation defined in this way, you should go look
  66. at what it really "got" or else just quickly redefine it
  67. by typing it one more time (with the WHITESPACE!).

  69. 4. The documentation could be more emphatic regarding 
  70. the recognition of keystrokes.  REMEMBER that arrow keys
  71. and mouse activity mean nothing to the recognition 
  72. sub-system.  Normal printing keystrokes are all that it
  73. ever sees.  This must be the case.  There is no way for 
  74. Global Abbreviations to know if the application you are
  75. using is in insert or overstrike mode.  This makes it 
  76. impossible to interpret arrow keys correctly.  The backspace
  77. key IS always understood, because it always means the same
  78. thing to everybody.

  80. 5. The uninstall feature does not remvove the globlabb.exe 
  81. file.  This is printed on the list of files not removed.
  82. If you do uninstall, you should check the option to print
  83. the list and then remove the globlabb.exe file and the
  84. gabhelp.hlp file.  ALL files that can be SAFELY removed 
  85. from your system by uninstall are; the rest can be printed
  86. out and you can remove or rename at your own discretion.

  89. ----Installation Trouble Shooting----
  90.  
  91. Below are some notes about things that can go wrong when
  92. installing ANY Windows application.  These are not specific
  93. to Global Abbreviations.
  94.  
  95. 1. Bad Bits.  It is possible to end up with corrupted files
  96. because of the nature of transmission systems.  Most modern
  97. modems and transfer protocols do error checking, but are not
  98. fool proof.  If you experience problems during install it 
  99. may be that you have bad bits.
  100.  
  101. 2. Not enough space.  You should have at least 1 MB of free
  102. space on your hard disk to install Global Abbreviations.
  103.  
  104. 3. Corrupt File System.  If there are problems with your file
  105. system, this can cause errors during the installation of
  106. any Windows application.
  107.  
  108.  
  109. ----Startup Trouble Shooting----
  110.  
  111. If there were no errors reported during setup, you should have
  112. no problems running the program.  As always, things can go
  113. wrong.  These notes apply to any Windows application and are
  114. not specific to Global Abbreviations.
  115.  
  116. 1.  Old .DLL or .VBX files in the wrong directory.  By 
  117. convention, all non-proprietary .DLL and .VBX files should
  118. reside in your windows/system/ directory.  Some applications
  119. incorrectly install .DLL or .VBX files in your windows/ directory
  120. instead of the windows/system/ directory.  If you get an error
  121. message about an out of date version of some .DLL or .VBX file
  122. you should note the name of the file and then search to see
  123. if there is a version in any directory other than your
  124. windows/system/ directory.  If so, rename the file with a
  125. different extension so that it does not interfere with the
  126. proper operation of any program.

  128. 2. Not enough resources.  Even the smallest application can
  129. cause this message if you try to start it when you have many
  130. other applications running.  Simply close down some application
  131. and try again.  Note- when the abbreviations are turned ON, 
  132. Global Abbreviations uses almost no system resources.  Even 
  133. when they are off and you are using the Editor or Importer
  134. it still uses few resources.

  139. You will find Global Abbreviations to be of the highest
  140. quality.  It has been tested again and again before release.
  141. As of release 1.0, there are NO known bugs, only the help 
  142. file clarifications listed above in this file.  There IS a long
  143. list of future enhancements.  Don't forget that your registration
  144. will entitle you to one free year of upgrades!
